According all the stuff that I have read, the GIs were supposed to be in a "quiet sector " of the front, it was not expected that they encountered Kampfgruppe Peiper!! (Fighting Group), feared SS divisions with huge Tiger tanks and so on... Germans knew that their Fatherland was near to be invaded, so they also have reasons to continue fighting!!
