The Gray Wolf (Canis lupus; also spelled Grey Wolf, see spelling differences; also known as Timber Wolf or Wolf) is a mammal in the order Carnivora. The Gray Wolf shares a common ancestry with the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris), as evidenced by DNA sequencing and genetic drift studies. Gray wolves were once abundant and distributed over much of North America, Eurasia, and the Middle East. Today, for a variety of human-related reasons, including widespread habitat destruction and excessive hunting, wolves inhabit only a very limited portion of their former range. Though listed as a species of least concern for extinction worldwide, for some regions including the Continental United States, the species is listed as endangered or threatened.

"protect man's(sic) best interests." ??? Yep that is a pretty basic, yet incorrect view of how an ecosystem works. Since almost 50% of the world's land biome area has been destroyed or disturbed by humans...it is very inaccurate to think that ecosystems need to be managed at all. They were doing just fine until we mismanaged them by extracting resources and destroying biodiversity at an exponential rate. Look at all the species that have gone extinct because of our phenomenal "management."

Yes to protect mans best interests. THE ECOSYSTEM IS FUNCTIONING ON ITS OWN WITH HUMAN INVOLVEMENT BECAUSE MAN IS PART OF THE ECOSYSTEM!!!! Where did the idea come from? Can you really ask that question? Man removed himself from the natural process long ago...Our way of life is completely linear, rather than cyclical. Your idea of "the best interests of man" is what I have a problem with...so you and I and all the other ranchers, rednecks, far-right "varmint" hunters are not on the same page with my way of thinking. Humans function completely without the circle of life, so your logic does not function in the natural world.
