ARTOONIX and EXPRESS ANIMATOR - Childhood's End

Uploaded by: AlanSturgess
Video Description:
A short animated movie inspired by Arthur C Clarke's stories '2001', 'Childhood's end' and 'The nine billion names of God'. For the text of that short story, look here:

The main program used to make this little movie was ARTOONIX but the star movements were tweened using EXPRESS ANIMATOR.
(v1.7 of Artoonix was subsequently released in April 2008 and now offers tweening)
For anyone who is interested in using Artoonix, I thoroughly recommend that you download v1.7 and try it. You only keep access to tweening if you register the software but this isn't expensive and at the price, you get what is probably the most powerful and versatile piece of animation software that is currently available. You can use it for stick figures; animating traditional drawn cartoons; animating sequential stop-frame style images - in fact, virtually anything you care to imagine. It doesn't offer any form of 'bones' but that aside, it's darn near unbeatable. And don't forget - most of its functions can be used free of charge for as long as you wish.

(PS: No, I'm not one of the developers, just a keen user).

I like this! This is very effective. THe billion names of God is one of my favorite stories too.

Thanks Dragongrad. I see from your own post that you have used Express Animator - I'm interested in it but am unsure about whether it will really be developed to its full potential. The current release seems like its pre-alpha because so many functions either don't yet work, or are very limited. I had awful trouble registering with the forum and a friend in America is now having the same problem. However - it's a program to keep your eye on. Meanwhile, I'll stick mostly with Artoonix.

Its fun to play around with though. We shall see what happens with it.

Got it in one Peter - well 'half' actually. I found a website with lots of Hal or Hal-style wavefiles. The ones that weren't Hal sounded virtually the same.

Quite a lot, is my guess. Development seems to be continuous and very active - the next upgrade is due to include tweening. I don't think it will ever challenge software such as Toonboom or Anime Studio, but for a program originally designed for younger users, it's becoming increasingly powerful and versatile. (I'm a bit of a fan).

Not sure I agree with 'funny'. You seem to like static drawings of stickmen and long pauses without any activity. I never understood why many Artoonix users only drew stickfigures when a program like PIVOT made it easy to actually animate them.
And why do you think my Artoonix movies were all meant to be 'funny'? Personally, I don't think blood and violence make good humour, not without the skill of people like Tarantino or Wes Craven.
Anyway. It's academic. I no longer use Artoonix.

WARNING: There has been no activity at all on the 'Express Animator' homepage for ages. The forum has been offline for weeks with no response to messages e-mailed to the developer. I'm 99% sure this is now a post-graduate hobby project. There MAY be an update in Dec '08 but with such an unresponsive website and developer, the program might just die away through lack of support and poor communication. I ADVISE YOU TO EMAIL THE DEVELOPER BEFORE REGISTERING. GET ASSURANCE THE PROJECT IS ACTIVE.
