When I start reading verbose, stuffy, pedantic diatribes about what beats Peart should be playing on because this is Jazz, I want to stab forks directly into my eyes. Seriously, this is music, and a tribute to one of the best drummers to have ever lived, and here we have fucking youtube jazz snobs dissecting it mathematically to the point of nausea. Grow up people. Just enjoy the video.

Neil Peart was and is the person that untold numbers of young drummers aspired to be, myself included. Just his lyrics alone are outstanding, let alone his drumming/percussive talents. He went through tough times about 10 years ago, made it through, and realized that not ALL of his blessings had been taken from him. Mr Peart, you may have lost your only child, but there are countless others among us who consider you the father of modern progressive drumming. God bless you sir, and thank you.

What's funny about this is all the Rush fans trying to defend Neils horrid jazz playing when they themselves know absolutely diddly about jazz. Think for a minute. Is it appropriate to jam the same old tired arena drum solo you've been playing for 25 years into the middle of a big band song? He couldn't come up with anything different? Give me a break. Total lack of creativity and talent. Neil is a one trick pony.

DM85, if you were referring to me as "defending Neil's jazz playing", you're mistaken. I wouldn't say that his style is jazz. This "might" have something to do with the fact that the style of the band he was in was not jazz. How many teenagers grow up listening to jazz? For me it was Rush, Queensryche, Dream Theatre, Poison, Boston, Motley Crew, etc. Among those, Rush/Peart stood out. Please read Archaic89's post . . .

Furthermore, I can hear a Weckl solo or maybe even a Buddy Rich and KNOW it was them - you can identify patterns/rhythms that each of them adheres to. Lack of creativity and talent? You're flat wrong there. Plenty creative, clearly talented, and for crying out loud, look at the lyrics that he's produced over the years. Don't hate on Neil just cuz he's not playing the "accepted" style of jazz to which you're accustomed.

Neil is a fantastic drummer....but as others have said, he doesn't fall into the jazz groove as easily as some others do....he seems too "stiff".
If you get a chance, watch at least the beginning of the Jazzmasters concert from The Hague (BR concert).
In this, it looks like Buddy is just floating his arms around and the sticks are doing the work themselves!

Well, there you have it! DomzDrumz VERY NON-cogent response to the issues that DrumMaster and myself bring up. Obviously many other drummers who KNOW about big band jazz drumming concur with us. Domz response is what a typical 12 year old boy would say on the playground with his buddies.
