Come on people the song was called Southern Man because of what was going on at the time in the civil rights movement and the resistance to it in the South (and elsewhere), but I think Neil Young was really addressing all people in this song. Evidently the song still needs to be heard based on the harsh attacks on posters here.

Ok, first of all if anyone new anything about the "southern way of life" they would not bash it. Being from the south isn't about being racist. The civil war was not fought over slavery. It was the unions solution to the confederate secession from the union. Now the reason the confederates broke away from the union was because of states rights, not slavery being abolished. it was the states right to choose to be a slave state or a free one. So it was a change that the rebels had no say in.
