Well, perhaps the "cruel" refers to the fact that these girls seems to be stucked working as mechanics in some kind of loser gas station during summer...I guess getting their hands dirty like that is not very fun for girls :-)

My bias crept through. I associate summers with all types of losses: lost time, collapsed relationships, missed fun, etc. So when I hear "cruel" and "summer", I made more personal connections I guess.
