Engineers' doodles. The U.S. military made a very good practical decision at the start of the war. They would not (w/ the major exception of the A-bomb, which began as a British project) concentrate on building new wonder weapons. They would focus on improved designs & production of proven technology. Major new weapons system require time for engineers to "work the bugs out." New factories need to be built, workers need to be trained to make, maintenance to keep working, & then operations.
