For the most part I agree with you, but that's a very broad statement. You forget some people were brought up by crazy religious fanatics and are thus, having engraved in their minds as impressionable young children that if they stray from religion they will suffer eternal hellfire. It's a shame, really, that these people will also become those crazy fanatics.
