The song is ancient, older than 100 years. I've heard that its probably one of them tunes that moved from Ireland to Appalachia to New Orleans. It became to popular music during the folk revival in the late 50's when Dave Van Ronk started playing the song that may he may have heard from Leadbelly or any other number of people. Dylan started playing. The animals heard and started playing it too.
Anyway, there's no "real" in the folk process, just variation.
