Most historians agree that Hitler both shot himself and took cyanide. The reason for this is he was worried about his hand trembling as he fired. The poison was basically a back up in case the shot missed. Cyanide is meant to work within seconds and it is supposed to be a quick and painless death. There were no actual witnesses present in the room as they killed themselves but there were many gathered in the hall waiting for the shot to be fired that signified the deed had been done.
