Acting Lessons 101 - Marlon Brando - Apocalypse Now

Uploaded by: LazyLightning66
Video Description:
Marlon Brando, one of the greatest actors of the last half century, and some say THE greatest, portrayed Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now. In the film, he is a highly decorated officer who went mad, killed many, and shacked up in Cambodia, miles from where the action was in Vietnam. Martin Sheen plays Capt.Willard who is sent to kill him. Sheen's trip up river to find him occupies most of the film. Brando is only in it for the last 45 mins or so.
This is his final monologue in the film, describing "The Horror".
Simply brilliant acting. His expressions are as sharp as can be.
Allegedly, he was told he could improvise the description of the story he tells Willard of what he had seen at the camp they had to go for innoculation of children, so, thats pretty wild for him to make up what he did as he went along. Truly a great actor of our time.

In any case, you over-rate the significance of improvisation. Harrison Ford improvised brilliantly when he shot the swordsman in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Did he have to probe Indys psyche to come up with that? Do the critics drool over it? No. Why not? Because it never pretended to be anything deep. It was simple expedience. Yet, its no less enlightening about Indys character than the glove scene is to Terrys in On the Waterfront.

Even with broader improvisation there is nothing magic; Its only use comes in the early stages of developing a role - as a kind of brainstorming catalyst for the detailed characterization that follows. STUDY and REHEARSAL alone bring truth, depth and realism to a part. It entails deep and prolonged examinationspainstaking refinements. Do you really think Brando could get to the heart of a deranged Colonel with a few fumbling improvisations?
But, beyond all ... ( 3 weeks ago by concentricity000)
But, beyond all that, youre not privy to whats going in Brandos mind when he performs. How can you be sure hes even in character, or that hes sincere in what hes saying? What new or distinct inflections are there in his voice, or expressions in his face that tell you he is? Hes performed a dozen roles that way. You allude to things below the surface, but nobody can be sure they are there. Sometimes a mumble is just a mumble. People only assume something happening because it's Brando.
All you can do is ... ( 3 weeks ago by concentricity000)
All you can do is TRUST in his sincerity and earnestness - something that Brando was famed for lacking. Even he likened acting to fraud!

That's exactly what it is. Fraud. He is an excellent conman. One of the best, I agree.
Incidentally, you ... ( 3 weeks ago by concentricity000)
Incidentally, you inadvertently highlighted something very interesting: the conceit of method and method-influenced acting in general: the idea that, 1) a performance is justified by its means, and 2) that acting is something to indulge, regardless of the greater good that is the impact of the finished film or play itself. Those are the nasty preconceptions that make awards ceremonies such a bad joke. Its about time appreciation of acting became less subjective.
A simple way to ... ( 3 weeks ago by concentricity000)
A simple way to judge a performance? Either it works, or it doesnt . Thats all there is to is. Stuff whether De someone like De Niro put on 50lbs for Raging Bull. How is that a mark of talent? Its not a feat of acting, it a case of over-eating. But people still say he was great in that role - he put on 50lbs? WTF? A performance should stand on its own merit and not require a back story to explain or justify it.
By that criteria, ... ( 3 weeks ago by concentricity000)
By that criteria, Brandos performance is a mess, and I feel sorry for Coppola and all the others who were let down by the compromised ending he brought about. And for the road, as far as mumbled, poorly lit finales go, Sly Stallones meltdown in First Blood blows this old fat sulker clear out the water. Not that that fact will ever be widely realized. See, Sly made a mistake: he learned his lines and didnt do all the deep and soulful method things - like scratching his ass.

The swordsman scene was class. That was genius through necessity, but I guess you know the story.

No, I thought ... ( 3 weeks ago by LeavesNoTrace)
No, I thought Stallone was amazing in that scene, given that now he's not known for Oscar winners. It was a true performance at the end. The whole violent build up to the end release. Seen the suicide version?
Okay. I'll get back ... ( 3 weeks ago by concentricity000)
Okay. I'll get back to it tomorrow. Take your time. Don't take it the wrong way. I actually like a lot about Brando. Malloy was mesmerizing. I just get annoyed by the distortion of reality when people talk about him.
I think with Raging ... ( 3 weeks ago by LeavesNoTrace)
I think with Raging Bull it wouldn't have worked if he'd been wearing a fat suit.I can see it would benefit DeNiros own performance if he could feel the transformation , dedication of the man. In order to be taken seriously he had to feel like the man. Its not talent , putting it on and taking it off. Like you say it's all part of the creation. The hows and whys shouldn't really matter. As an audience, we shouldnt need to know about the creative process.
Yeah there is a lot ... ( 3 weeks ago by LeavesNoTrace)
Yeah there is a lot of bullshit about him and not a lot of people like the end of Apocolypse now, everytime I watch it (twice yesterday and late for work) I can't wait for the complete sane/insane ramblings of Kurtz.

I find something inherently disturbing about someone putting as much energy as you have into taking away the joy away from people who enjoy this scene.

The people who are talking about this is "bad" acting just don't know what the fuck method or real acting is. Reading straight from a script isn't acting, neither is being the character acting, but playing as someone the best you think of the character is acting.
Some of you guys don't know shit, but you talk like you do. Seriously, some of you guys just sound alike.

You, on the other hand, are a clueless, fucktarded waste of human flesh. You can shove your delusions about the greatness of
The Method up your pretentious ass. That's assuming there's room there alongside your head, and Marlon Brando's decomposing cock, of course.

brando was one of ... ( 3 days ago by smspartansm)
brando was one of the greatest actors of all time no doubt. I just wish he had a better person, I mean its said that he was hard to work with, showed up to roles out of shape and unprepared(thats why he is seen in shadows much of the time in this as he was overweight) and also that he demanded huge salaries for his roles, ex. this film 1mill a week, superman 3m+ for 2 weeks of work
