For the record-on June 26. 1944 7671 ethnic Russians were serving on Hitler's side.They formed 7 poliece batallions(nr 283, 314, 315, 325, 326, 327, 328) which were directly invloved in anti-partizan operations and other formations, many serving in Latvian legion as well which was a battle unit, not repressive unit btw

On July 1, 1944 the Latvian Legion had 87,550 men. Another 23,000 Latvians (including all other ethnicities of former independet Latvia, excluding Jews) were serving as Wehrmacht "auxiliaries" -
Together it makes 110550 - Latvian Legion +other formations.
From these 110550 men 7671 were ethnic Russians from Latvia (7%), including quite many volunteers which had seen the "libearation goods" of Soviets in 1940. before Soviets were even at war with Nazis, even better, they were allies..

And all this knowing that ethnic Russians were 10,5% of all citizens in Latvia in 1939. 7% of all Latvian citizens on German side is quite a number , knowing that vast majority of the Red army which they fought against were ethnic Russians from Soviet Russia. Agreed?

Ah yes... the liberty of Europe. Did you think that Germany would allow the people who fought for them to live after the war? They didn't have a problem killing all the people during war that they deemed inferior.
What makes you think that they would have hesitated to isolate the Latvian population that fought for them and systematically kill them off too? By the end of the war, the SS wasn't all that picky anymore about whom they incorporated into the SS.

What we know was what happened in Latvia in 1940-41 and 1944-1991. What we don't know is what would have happened if the Soviets were defeated. The question is: what sort of choice was left to people in Latvia who supported neither the Nazis nor the Soviets (the Allies at the time)? What would you have done?

I think by 1944 it was clear that Nazi Germany was not going to make it. To try to prevent the Soviets from invading Latvia (a country which was annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940 - never recognised by the Western Allies) and hope that resistance might attract the attention of the West (who were behind the Atlantic Charter after all) is not such a bad idea at all. In Estonia the legal underground government called upon all able men to join the Est. Legion with exactly the same consideration.
