And this week the world is marking 70 years since Kristallnacht, the night ‏the Nazis unleashed a series of riots against the Jews in Germany and Austria. Our team in Jerusalem is at the memorial ceremony.
A special glass statue representing a Synagogue destroyed by Nazis was inaugurated during a special ceremony that took place at Jerusalem's "Mishkenot Shaananim" center.
The event organizers say the statue was built in the old traditional Jewish synagogue style and symbolically connects the past with the present.
Rabbi Itzhak Cohen, the Israeli Minister of Religious Affairs says that the Jewish People had suffered horrible crimes in those days but that there was no power that could really destroy this nation.
[Itzhak Cohen, Minister of Religious Affairs]: (Male Hebrew Quote)
"Synagogs and places for Torah studies were burned down according to a timed plan - more than one thousand synagogues. Hundreds of Jews were murdered, three thousand were sent to concentration camps, business places were ransacked and all of this was done out of hatred of the Jewish People. But as you can see we stand here in Jerusalem and the Jewish People survive and last."
The Ambassadors of Germany and Austria both attended to deliver the message that their nations have gone through a significant change in the decades that have passed.
[Dr. Harald Kinderman, German Ambassador to Israel]: (Male German)
"The November Pogrom still gains in meaning...[and] Germany feels obligated to [remember] this. And it is a big sign, that today we are here together, united in our efforts."
Isaac Herzog, the Israeli minister of Welfare, Social Services and the struggle against Anti-Semitism says that these days Israel makes many efforts to stop new surges of Anti Semitism in the world adding...
[Isaac Herzog, Minister of Welfare]: (English Male Quote)
"Spirit of freedom should prevail anywhere around the world, democracy, freedom, civil libirties are very vital for all Humanity."
