Great show, again, GD. Of all the men in this engagement, I have always been the most impressed by those Stringbag pilots who went in against Bismarck.

War normally brings the worst part of human beings out from both warring sides. Unfortunately it still has not been discarded as a common human activity.

Well, probably more ... ( 2 months ago by DataWaveTaGo)
Well, probably more constructive is this - The British Navy seems to have developed a severe, and possibly fatally hubristic sense of naval superiority. e.g. Their use of merchant ships flying the American flag and armed with hidden guns in WW I to combat U-boats is just one symptom of their extreme proprietary psychosis of "Britannia Rule The Waves".
Jesus are you ... ( 2 months ago by Mcplkelly)
Jesus are you serious? Its war, its not suppose to be nice. The Bismark had to be sunk, thus they kept shooting until it was sunk.

What were they to do? Do you think the Germans gave a damn about the Hood? Get a grip. Those "poor old Germans" were not being very nice to the Brits at the time.

I'm Polish too. Being Polish doesn't give you license to be stupid.

The following is Humor, OK.
Sure, but England had an established Empire and a navy based on Press Gangs, so Germany, being a young upstart, should have been treated with a little more consideration, just so 'she' could find 'her' feet and do some major land grabbing of 'her' own.
Once the German Empire got established, THEN the Brits could start Fighting Dirty again.
LOL!
I'm not sure how to ... ( 2 months ago by LightWarrior2000)
I'm not sure how to put this but I agree it's not about being "nice" but had to do with something else to give reason to save some of the sailors. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it partly about preventing more deaths as there's been enough already?...or something like that? I can't really put a finger on it but I know it was something else and not being "nice" to give cause to save the sailors from the Bismark.

"Do you think the Germans gave a damn about the Hood?"
Yes, they did. And if you had ever heard how German Bismarck survivors feel about Hood's sinking, you would know it. It's actually briefly mentioned in this documentary as well.

"Those "poor old Germans" were not being very nice to the Brits at the time."
The British can hardly be said to have been any nicer, and it was not just all a retaliation for cruelties that the Germans had begun. Some unnecessary things were started by the British.

"Get a grip."
Good idea. Speaking of it: What about following your own advice?
"I'm Polish too. Being Polish doesn't give you license to be stupid."
My ancestry is partly Polish, too, and hence I cannot but reiterate your remark.
excellent show , ... ( 1 month ago by shaundis2117)
excellent show , thank you for posting this
and to those of you who are debating the "niceities" of war , i think you forget, it is war, period.trying to make logic out of anything to do with war is a lost hope.
germany had europe in it`s fist and was going for britian next, this conflaguration was the result, if anything you should be respectfull and humble to those who lost thier lives in this tragic affair and the ones that followed.
I could understand ... ( 1 month ago by YamatoTitanic)
I could understand why the british ships fired on there own planes they thought that the torpedo bombers were interfearing with them. The Royal navy decided that Bismarck with be theres and theres only. They wanted to get Bismarck Back for what happened to Hood.

I am sad for ... ( 1 month ago by ReiAyanami4ever)
I am sad for realizing that 65 years later British are still propagating.1st:None torpedo penetrated Bismark's anti torpedo armor and double hull next to the main belt. The hit they claim was high on to the main deck after it started rolling over because of the scuttling! This was not mentioned! The entire course of the film they wanted to find who sink it and near the end they concluded "we" explaining it for 10" They deliberately left 700 men to freeze to death whatever the excuse!
Array ( 1 month ago by ReiAyanami4ever)
--> From the 500 shells British ships fired ONLY ONE (1) 16" from Rodney penetrated the hull ABOVE THE WATERLINE.Robert Ballard's team found the anti torpedo belt intact and the only damage on the hull was from the 5000m drop to the ocean floor and 4 torpedo hits that didn't caused fatal damage. All the bibliography says Bismarck was SCUTTLED by her crew. They murdered 700 men in cold blood and its mentioned for 4".The British WW2 syndrome that"no,we didn't get our arses kicked" still thrives.

Kind of irrelevent / sunk versus scuttled
Pocket Battleship Graf Spee was scuttled. O.K.
Bismarck sunk/scuttled?
Realy does not matter.
The German ship was no longer a problem for the R.N. next day.
