NEW GENERATION MARKS BURMA'S CRACKDOWN (8-8-88)

Video Description:
Many activists work hard day and night and send information through internet and print to the world and inside Burma
The 8th day of the 8th month of the year 1988, an auspicious date which marks the start of the students' uprising on the streets of Yangon, the rebellion that spread like wildfire. An estimated 3000 pro democracy activists were killed in the brutal government crackdown that followed, but their struggle lives on.
Many activists fled from Burma and took refuge in the neighboring countries.
In the case of September 2007 last year, foot soldiers of the military government brutally crushed the uprising led by nation's revered monks.
In May, this year when the cyclone Nargis hit Burma and killed at least 130,000 people
and affected millions, the government kept blind eye to the suffering of the people and restrict to get aids from foreign countries.
It is in times of uncertainty -- as there will be in the run up to the polls -- that protest and change seem to happen in Burma. The next two years are likely to be volatile -- and more protests, led by the monks and the students are almost certain.
Many exiled students are praying for peaceful change but they know that back home Burma, the spirited democracy groups are calling for an armed uprising which can be greater than the uprising of 8-8-88.
