I feel that who sunk the Bismark is a moot point. The Royal Navy brought about the demise of the Bismarck. If the Germans didnt scuttle him he would have been sunk. Scuttled or not his fate was sealed. I also dont feel the Brits had any plans on taking her...he was going to the bottom. After Hood was sunk there was no other way. Her sinking could only be avenged by Bismarck being sunk....Politics, propaganda and all that. Game, point, match, to the RN.

I am inclined to think according to your lines. After the Bismarck sunk the Hood, the pride of the Royal Navy, I don't think the British were in the mood to leave the Bismarck afloat.

Hitler made a mistake going to war to early. He originally planed to go to war with Britian in 1944 by then he hoped to have a big navy. Bismarck was part of Plan Z which also included an unbuilt class of super battleships that would have out classed Bismarck.

She was shipping about 10,000 tons of water when the scuttle order was given, and would have gone down anyway. Scuttling sped up an inevitable process. If anything, the Germans were far to keen to scuttle their ships - Scapa Flow (50 of them), Graf Spee, Dresden, Bianca, Ussukuma, Python, Stier, many more...

U-74 picked up three men, and the German weather ship Saschenwald rescued another two. The Spanish cruiser Canarias was dispatched at the request of the German government to find more survivors, but all the Spaniards found were debris and bodies.
