Without Great ... ( 1 week ago by PintJohnBull)
Without Great britain and its Dominions France would of been taken out and beaten miserably big time by Germany in WW1.
USA declared war on April 1917, but didnt fully engage Germans till spring 1918.
France were winners but the honours need to be shared equally with Great Britain who were also decisive winners.

France didn't win WW1 bloodfurie. As PintJohn says, France would've been easily destroyed by Germany were it not for British, Canadians, Americans, African and Arab colonials coming to rescue France. Indeed, towards the end of the war many french units were fed up of their commanders stupid military decisions and were deserting alot. Luckily for France it had all its Allies holding the line when Germany was able to shift a massive amount of troops from the Eastern Front from 1917 on.

PintJohn is kind to you bloodfurie in saying France were 'winners'. Though the French soldiers were brave and got slaughtered in attacks, if definitely wasn't any French leadership that could've been said aided in winning the war.
Not to be a jerk, ... ( 1 week ago by Unwardil)
Not to be a jerk, but those infantry squares would never have repelled cavalry.
It takes 4 ranks per face, the front two fire a volley to break up in incomming charge and then kneel down, planting thier bayonets up at a 45 degree angle like pikes, thus making a hedge of blades into which the horses will refuse to advance and instead veer away. Without that hedge, the horses will charge home and you get slaughter.
Other than that, excellent!

Those infantry ... ( 1 week ago by yournightmare6)
Those infantry squares actually worked. If the human could control the mind of the horse, it wouldn't have. It worked again the horse's mind, horses just don't charge a big box with points on them. Much of the time it didn't work, it also is risky because they make perfect targets for cannons.

You truely overestimate the British commitment. were a factor in the war no doubt, but the troop commitment was small compared to the French. The Germans would have won WW1 simply because they had more people than France. he French tactics were the same as the Germans, but the French used them much more. That tactic was simply; Attack, attack, attack!

Actually not all squares were front ranks kneeling. Continental Europe Armies had all ranks standing only squares. Sometimes division sized squares too. An Old Guard unit at the end of Waterloo formed a 'triangle'. But yes, a deep hedge of bayonets was the key as you said.

but in WW1 the French staff's strategy typically attacked in all the wrong places- that's why they were getting demoralised with their needless losses. They were getting bled dry for no gain.

About 2'000 times more people, 1'000 times smokier, 100'000'000 times bloodier and 9 hours and 40 odd minutes longer, and with a load of Germans turning up to save the day near the end, and this might actually be slightly more accurate.
