Congo's Tin Soldiers - Democratic Republic of Congo

Uploaded by: journeymanpictures
Video Description:
May 2006
The West's demand for Cassiterite is fuelling the killings in Congo. Militias rely on slave labour to extract the ore, forcing locals to work in sub-human conditions.
"Once you get down there, there's no air", describes one worker. "The rocks often bury us and you have to crawl through the tiny hole, using your fingers to dig." Labourers like him often go unpaid. They're forced to work at gunpoint by militias operating outside the control of the government. "Different armed groups do what they want with the population", laments minister Buta Muiso. But British businessman Ketankumar Kotecha sees nothing wrong in buying casiterite from the militias. "If I didn't do it, someone else would. I am not here as some kind of moral saviour."

Oh and your comment on Chinese stealing from African's...Europe's a little angel isn't it? Who are you to tell someone not to watch a video based on their ethnicity. By your standards, we should ban all Europeans from watching African programs for ever!

maybe you should take a look at the book "confession of an economics hitman". That'll probably give you some new prospectives. I personally think why both African South American are relatively poor now is largely due to the white colonizers.

Agreed. China might be stealing their wealth now, but the western have been stealing and robbing for more than a few hundred years!

yes indeed. the exploitation of African slaves had totally changed the demographics of some countries. not to mention the president-to-be of the U.S.

Well well well blame it on whitey, how refreshing. Lets see, Zimbabble is in shambles, or to rephrase that: since Whiteman get kicked out, the country has zero infrastructure left. No hydro, no farms, no industry, no running water, no sewage plants, no fuck all! and a average life span of 31 years. All due to an average iq of 70.

Don't imagine that with slaves and colonialism comfortably in history that the exploiters were through. Economic colonialism--through the skulduggery of the IMF, through bribery, through coups--have kept the third world on the ropes. People with a third world education will not tend to score high on IQ tests; has nothing to do with intelligence.

you sure? then how is it possible for a two-year-old to have an IQ of 150+?
The concept of IQ ... ( 3 weeks ago by thoughtbell)
The concept of IQ as a legitimate measure of intelligence is dubious on a number of levels. First, they are culturally biased. Second, they measure test-taking ability, which isn't necessarily the same as intelligence. Third, intelligence is difficult to separate from learned responses. Fourth, those aspects which they purport to measure fall far short of capturing something so complex and elusive as native aptitudes. I suppose this two-year-old might be talented at taking IQ tests.

IQ is based on age. ... ( 3 weeks ago by greycloud24)
IQ is based on age. it is easier for young children to score high on it because the developmental differences between individuals varies greatly by genetic differences. besides IQ is not a good basis for learning. by government IQ standards i am a genius but i would not consider myself much more intelligent than most of my college peers.

it is sad that first world nations must stand on top of third world nations in order to maintain their infrastructure. a fair dealing with the people of the congo would cut out the middle men of the operation and bring in equipment so that working conditions would be more safe and so that humane treatment of the workers could be maintained. what stops this from happening? we pay the middlemen, we promote the actions of these men.

I know for a fact that Africa is a place where people do not see the need of self improvment. They seem not interested in improving their country but fighting each other for nothing. China should rape Africa for its natual resources and then run away. Africa is no good. As for 50 years Africa has recieved over $500 billion and nothing has changed.

The thing about inborn skill is that it is not yet developed. Something can be "made" to measure it; doesn't mean it's actually accurate.

The temptation is ... ( 3 weeks ago by thoughtbell)
The temptation is to use a the construct of intelligence to explain brutality. I hope you will someday get beyond that. When King Leopold II turned DR Congo into a vast labor camp, he murdered over 10 million people. The central police station was decorated with skulls. The hands of children were chopped off to encourage the desperation-driven hunt for rubber, which made the king and Belgium obscenely rich. Superiority, inferiority is a seductive explanation, but not the only one.
Blame is always ... ( 3 weeks ago by westentrance)
Blame is always placed on early colonialists for drawing artificial borders. At least there was building, order and relative peace then. In reality, it does not matter where borders are drawn. Africa is comprised of roughly 350 tribes. Many of the tribes distrust or even hate each other. Those feelings in many cases have been with them since before colonialism. Because of this, Africa will always have several regional wars in progress.
Actually, the Congo ... ( 2 weeks ago by shimweshi)
Actually, the Congo alone counts more than 280 tribes, and it's one country out of more than 50. The entire Africa comprises of more than a thousand tribes and languages! Colonialism played a huge part of what Africa today is. Think about it... If the Chinese came to the US/Canada/ Or Europe and imposed their way of life (at least their judicial, economic, educational,.... systems) do you think you would be able to say what you just said? I don't think so! That's what Africa is today!
