Me 262 Explored

Uploaded by: auldm
Video Description:
A look at the Me 262 jet fighter.
The most advanced fighter of the Second World War, too few Messerschmitt Me262s were deployed by the Luftwaffe at too late a stage to affect the course of the air war over Europe.
"What an aircraft! It was as though the Angels were pushing!" (Luftwaffe fighter ace Generalleutnant Adolf Galland, describing his first flight in an Me262).
Preliminary design work on what was to become the Me262 began in 1938. Persistent problems with the turbojets intended for the aircraft delayed the project and the first flight by a Me262 using only jet power did not take place until July 1942.
In December 1943 Hitler decreed that the Me262 Schwalbe (Swallow) should only be manufactured as a fighter bomber. Senior Luftwaffe officers believed that the Me262 was more valuable as a fighter, and Hitler's wishes were initially ignored much to his subsequent fury.
Small numbers of Me262 fighters and fighter bombers were used operationally by the Luftwaffe from mid 1944. Allied pilots found the Me262 a formidable opponent and special tactics were adopted to meet the new threat. However, chronic supply shortages meant that few Me262s saw combat and the true potential of the Me262 was never realised.

Because we had the biggest incompetent leader at this time. Best example is this yet, everybody told hitler that this is an airplane to attack other airplanes. But hitler told them to support this yet with bombs to attack other towns. That´s only a small example. Luckily we lose. I wouldn´t like to live in a totatillary country

Awesome. Politics aside, the Germans have engineered some very cool machines. Right down to the little tool set in the trunk of a BMW.

LOL, the problem is that BMWs have gotten cheap just like almost all other brands - The tool kit is almost non-existent in new BMWs (I think you get the screwdriver and wheel lug bar only).

The opening shots are in one of my favorite Smithsonian Institute Air and Space museum rooms. There is the ME-262 sharing a room with a P-51 Mustang and it has to be experienced if you are into the older planes of that era. Those two speak volumes and I am smiling about it now. It's only 8 miles away, I should go up there and check them out soon.

Hitler had the chance but was an idiot insisting that it be a blitz bomber instead of a fighter. By the time Steinhoff and Galland won the fight to make it a fighter, it was too late. 100 Me-262's thrown at a bomber formation of 1000 B-17s would have dealt a massive blow to the Allied bombing offensive.

You bet. The Me262 was the first fully operational jet fighter of all time. English were trying themselves with the Gloster Meteor but it never saw action during WWII.

Yes, indeed they were. When hasting back through the Netherlands in late 44 my Granddad saw many of them abondoned on airfields due to lack of kerosene. They outmanouvered the Allied fighters because of their high speed, but ironically were too fast to shoot down bombers. It was like picking up waste from a moving car. Before the pilots had aimed, they had passed their victims. To make things worse the engines had a trendency to overheat and burst.

I heard that the meteor actually did because one managed to force a V1 flying bomb to crash in 1945 by flipping its wing over. I had heard this was important because it was the the first instance of jet vs. jet combat.

they say 1400 were built but only a small fraction were used as fighters, Hitler insisted they should be used as bombers - to bomb them brits a little. oh well, he was an infantry corporal, so can't blame him for this crappy strategical decision. the initial intention of air commanders was to use the M262 as fighters, concentrated en-masse, to break-up the huge US bomber formations, then allow conventional fighters to destroy them in a piecemeal fashion. anyways - it looks awesome!!
