I think it's odd that you don't here this sung by many women. I mean, male singers usually change the line "it's been the ruin of many poor girls" to 'poor boys'. If I hadn't looked it up, I would never have known it was about prostitution. Anyway, she does a great job. Great song.

Bob Dylan recorded it long before The Animals did, but he didn't write it. It's a traditional song. Earliest recording comes from the 1930's.
