its true that american pilots where not as good as german pilots most am. only had limitted stick time against battle hardened germans but americans fought with bravery and courage that was unsurpassed by any other warriors

the only reason german pilots shot down more planes is because there were more targets for them. surrounded by the ussr, usa, and u.k., they were constantly being attacked. if the american (or soviet or british) pilots had as many targets as the germans, they also would have produced aces with 100-300+ kills each

german pilots also had a head start on everyone else. aviation programs were promoted among the youth - erich hartmann began flying gliders as a teenager long before the war began. by the time americans pilots arrived in the eto and began strategic bombing, german pilots had been flying combat missions for years and had gained valuable experience especially from the eastern front

What i found funny is, that I was at a WWII weekend thing, and I was talking to these to men at a booth.. One was a German ace the other and American. and They sat there laughing telling stories haveing a good time, when back in 1944 the American shot him down XD
and here they are best of pals, its quite ironic how life turns out :)

Actually while Germans had more field experience American flight training was more complete with most pilots getting over 100 hours flight time before even going into combat while late war luftwaffe replacement trainees were thrust into battle with only about a few weeks in the sky. This was only after the war turned against the axis but it made a huge difference near the end. And there always has been a sort of respect between enemy pilots. There was often more admiration than hatred in battle.

The only reason that they had those big scores was because they lied about how many planes they shot down. No gun cameras like in the video. There are plenty of stories of German pilots going out on a mission and coming back reporting that they shot down 30 aircraft, that is half a second of firing which is impossible.

Mr. ArmouredGod...Fact is that Hans-Joachim Marseille in his ME-109 averaged 16 bullets per plane he shot down during a day on which he shot down around 15 allied fighters (9/1/1942). This is easily confirmed online, and not generally disputed. You might be interested to learn that the ME-109 had a 20mm cannon as part of its armament. Quite effective. Now.... please give some references for that "shot down 30 aircraft" statement. I am hearing this for the first time, and you have my interest.

Goldenhawk352, I have no doubt that a german ace would be able to do shoot down 15 planes, with 1 second of fire for each with the cannon. Then remember the alied planes were heavily armoured and had self sealing gas tanks, which made them very hard to shoot down. There are other aces that claimed to shoot down 30 or so planes (I don't remember where I heard that, probably History Channel when it was good) which is just ludacris.

Your statement about the German pilots made previously, "No gun cameras like in the video", leaves me puzzled. One example of their gun camera footage can be found easily on YouTube, in the form of a training film composed of German gun camera footage. If the "shoot down 30 or so" statement refers to CAREER kills, then a very large number of German pilots could say that truthfully. I suggest you read "Horrido!" to become better informed on this topic. I'll give you the last word.

Yes they had Gun cameras, in a very limited numbers equipped on their planes. No not CAREER kills in one flight kills. Also about book and being informed on this topic why don't you read "Fighter Pilot; The First American Ace of World War II" by William R. Dunn the actual guy the American ace. He even talks about how the German system is flawed. So sir, you may have the last word, and never throw your so called "knowledge" in others faces, makes you seem like a jerk huh?
