1944 WWII M1 Garand (M1-E8) sniper rifle at 420 yards

Uploaded by: mag30th
Video Description:
I love the restoration of the greatest rifle ever manufactured, the M1 Garand. This is one of my babies; this is my fully restored WWII era M1-E8 Garand sniper rifle. (M81 2.5x scope on a Springfield Armory mount, with cross-hairs. Standardized for snipers in September 1944) Everything on this rifle is authentic with the exception of the check piece and sling, which are reproductions. The M1E8 was designated the M1D and adopted as a "substitute standard" in September 1944. Virtually no M1Ds were produced during W.W.II. Since all M1Ds (with the exception of the tool room models) fall into the category of "rebuilds" there is no serial number range generally associated with this version of the M1 sniper rifle.

I just reread this. a 2.5x scope?? Not a 10x? I don't know that much except for hunting, but I thought that was for pistols. What am I missing? Thanks!
Yup, 2.5 scope. ... ( 1 month ago by mag30th)
Yup, 2.5 scope. From what I've read, the idea of a wide range of view out-weighed a high zoom. It is a somewhat awkward scope, not much better target identification than if you were to use a small low-power set of binoculars.

if this is a scope from WWII, aren't you worried about it breaking from the recoil? I mean, i know the scope was designed for this gun and this caliber but still.

Yes and no, I do worry about anything breaking, mostly the glass, but everything seems very sound right now. I keep my fingers crossed, it would be very costly repairing anything.

I thought the flash hider on the M1-C and M1-Ds were vortex style. Did you add that one yourself or did the gun come like that?
Hell, either way, BEAUTIFUL piece.

Thanks! The cone type, as one this one, was the standard type for the M1C and WWII era M1D's. During the Korean War the pronged flash suppressor was used. The cone type, affected the accuracy at long ranges, the pronged one did not affect the accuracy at all. I used the pronged flash suppressor on my M1D on my video titled, "1000 yards with an M1 Garand."

Define "Springfield ... ( 3 weeks ago by mag30th)
Define "Springfield" Many call the 03 bolt action "the Springfield" yet Garand's in WWII were manufactured by Springfield and Winchester. So to claim they used "Springfield's" like so vague its hard to figure where you are coming from....

Its fun but I actualy enjoy shooting a couple of my other rifles as much. If I had just a few to shoot, I may pick my K31 Swiss or the Lee Enfield No.1 Mk III, they are also both very fine rifles.

yes, i have heard that those are very goo too. this range that i go to. w w w (dot) gunsnh (dot) c o m you can rent anything full auto and them some. my favorite is the glock 20. i got to try the thompson and m16 they are both white trash. they jam more than anything else. they guy has a M1 on the wall, but u can't fire it because the "bullets are too fast for the steel" i really wanna hear that PINGGGGG!!!!! maybe some day. the russian ppsh-41 was flawless. one of my favorites.

hey, i was just wondering, and im sorry if th9is is a stupid question, but, i notice the brass always ejects more to the right even though the clip opens at the top of the rifle, now me, being a left hander, if i was to file the m1, would i always be getting brass-faced? i may sound stupid, but id like to know.

damn, so in ww2, how did a left-handed shooter cope? i understand how hot the round comes out, and a mate of mine (in the australian army) had to fire a right handed austyer f88 (when he was left handed to begin with) and he said he was getting cases smashinginto his jaw with unbeleivable power and it took his mind off of concerntration... this is a weird thing for a left handed to fire, i mean, wouldnt you make the garand universal for both handed people?

I may be mistaken but I believe left-handed people were taught to fire right-handed. But don't take my word for it, I may be wrong.
that would be wierd ... ( 1 week ago by Taylor3690)
that would be wierd! and not too mention, if i found myself in a fire-fight with the enemy, i wouldnt care about copping some hot brass in the face, as long as it keeps my ass bullet-free. lol
